Senior DIG's son brutally assaulted by Minister's son

The son of a senior Deputy Inspector General of Police was seriously wounded after being brutally assaulted by a group led by the son of Minister Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon.

The incident occurred in a high end holiday resort in Passikudah in the Batticaloa District at 3:30 p.m. yesterday. The victim had been mercilessly assaulted after he objected to being photographed in the background of the pictures of the group that was intoxicated and engaging in indecent behaviour on the beachfront.

More than a dozen youth led by Sirisena's son rounded on the victim and beat him unconscious, eyewitnesses said. He is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Kalkudah Hospital, police said. The victim sustained severe injuries from the attack. Minister Sirisena's son and the other perpetrators of the unprovoked attack were arrested by the Kalkudah Police. Eyewitnesses said that when the police had arrived on the scene and attempted to make arrest, the assaulters turned on the police officers.
